Quarantining
New guidelines regarding how long one needs to quarantine for
(as of December 2020):
The CDC released new guidelines on two additional options for how long quarantine should last for a person that was exposed to COVID-19 and who does not have any symptoms.
These new guidelines do NOT apply to individuals in schools and daycares as this is determined by the Maryland State Department of Education which has not changed their recommendations at this time. It is most pertinent for adults/parents.
- Quarantine can end after 10 days without testing if you have not developed any symptoms.
- Quarantine can end after 7 days if you have received a negative COVID-19 test result and you have not developed any symptoms. A COVID-19 PCR test should be performed within 48 hours of the quarantine end date and 5 or more days after exposure.
It is important to note that the CDC still endorses quarantining for 14 days but recognizes that a shorter time period can decrease the economic hardship of a 2-week quarantine. There is still a small residual risk that someone could transmit the virus after their shortened quarantine period. That is why it is crucial to continue to wear a mask, maintain at least 6 feet of distance, wash hands, and avoid crowds to prevent the spread of the virus. You must continue to monitor for symptoms until 14 days after the exposure to COVID-19. If symptoms develop, then you should immediately self-isolate and contact your healthcare provider.
